Human Equality: Diversity

Why It Matters //

God created mankind in his own image, as we can read in Genesis 1:27. This means that all humans, regardless of race, gender, nationality, or tribe are a reflection of God. God created us different on purpose -- diversity is good. How do we engage and learn from different cultures with humility? Do I automatically believe my nationality or culture is "right" or am I willing to learn from others?

What It's Talking About //

The Book of Revelation was written by John the son of Zebedee (see Mt 10:2), according to most scholars, towards the later years of the first century. At this time Christians were facing persecution and eagerly awaiting the return of Christ. In this passage, John is describing a vision that he had about a time in the future, where he sees people in front of the throne before the Lamb (a picture of Jesus as the perfect sacrifice). John recounts that he saw people from all nations, tribes, and peoples in front of the throne — God values all nations and peoples as they are distinguished before his throne, yet they cry out in unity “OUR God”.

Revelation 7:9-12 NIV

9 After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands.

10 And they cried out in a loud voice:

“Salvation belongs to our God,

who sits on the throne,

and to the Lamb.”

11 All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. They fell down on their faces before the throne and worshiped God,

12 saying:

“Amen!

Praise and glory

and wisdom and thanks and honor

and power and strength

be to our God for ever and ever.

Amen!”
