The Spirit is One with Jesus

Why It Matters //

As Jesus prays for us we gain insight into his priorities; his last words before the cross; the things he wanted his followers to pay attention to. Jesus focuses on his communion of love with the Holy Spirit and the Father and that we as his followers would be brought into this reality. That we would understand the love that exists in the triune reality: Father, Son, Spirit and that we have been invited into this love by Jesus. The reality of this communion with the trinity should impact greatly the way we love God, the way we love ourselves and the way we love others.

What It's Talking About //

The Gospel of John, like Matthew, Mark and Luke, tells the story of Jesus, highlighting more of the personal encounters and conversations people had with Him. John also captures intimate moments between Jesus with his disciples, where he begins to prepare them for what is to come: his death, resurrection, ascension, and in this passage, the gift of the Holy Spirit that will be given them. The role of the Holy Spirit — or as he says, the Advocate — is to guide us, to help us discern the Father’s will and direction while Jesus is no longer physically with us.

John 16:7-15 NLT

7 But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you.

8 And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment.

9 The world’s sin is that it refuses to believe in me.

10 Righteousness is available because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more.

11 Judgment will come because the ruler of this world has already been judged.

12 “There is so much more I want to tell you, but you can’t bear it now.

13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.

14 He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me.

15 All that belongs to the Father is mine; this is why I said, ‘The Spirit will tell you whatever he receives from me.’
