Why it Matters//
As believers, how we spend our time and what we spend it on reflects what and WHOM we value, and, in a way, worship. In a day and age where it is so easy to squander our time on meaningless and aimless things, how are we being set apart in the ways we intentionally invest time into things or people? How does our use of time mirror our convictions and beliefs about what God has called us to DO and the kind of people God has called us to BE? We are given grace, to be sure, but we are also called to be good stewards of every gift and resource He gives us, including our time and efforts. We are called to be people of wisdom and understanding, who would pursue Him in every season and know how to act and respond to the different times and stages life may bring.
What it's Talking About//
Proverbs and Ecclesiastes are both considered Books of Wisdom in the Bible primarily written by King Solomon, David’s son and heir whom God had blessed with a gift of godly wisdom. Through these books, Solomon advises Israel through various sayings and teachings, ultimately urging them to fear the Word of God and pursue His wisdom and His ways above the words and ways of the world: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline” (Prov 1:7). In Ecclesiastes, King Solomon specifically delves into the difficult questions and emotions surrounding human existence and the meaning of life, things that even today we wrestle with and ask God about: “What purpose do we ultimately serve in this lifetime?”
Proverbs 12:11 ESV
Whoever works his land will have plenty of bread, but he who follows worthless pursuits lacks sense.
Proverbs 12:24 ESV
The hand of the diligent will rule, while the slothful will be put to forced labor.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 ESV
1 For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:
2 a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
3 a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
4 a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
5 a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
6 a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
7 a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
8 a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace.
